West Side Story in it’s Final week and the reviews are in-
Dont miss it before it goes!

Gateway honors the late Arthur Laurents in this classic tale of love, music, passion and dance.

The New York Times... "When the Jets and their girlfriends stare down their rivals, the Sharks and their dates, on the dance floor, the toughness and aggression explode like firecrackers. A true sense of menace exudes from “Dance at the Gym,” with its masterly collaboration of lighting, music, dialogue and choreography.”

"Mr. DiRoma is a dreamy Tony. Ms. Zorn is a lovely Maria. Her operatic soprano blends smoothly with her co-star’s bell-clear voice for a series of powerful duets.”

"It is hard to think of another stage musical that piles one blissful number on top of another with such escalating force, and the Gateway production serves it up well.

Newsday raves… The genius of the original creative artists is rediscovered through this deep and deeply talented ensemble."

" Too bad Laurent’s didn’t live to see a fresh young Gateway cast deliver an inspired classic rendition of his masterpiece.

The Hampton’s own Dan's Papers… High marks to the Gateway team for setting such a high standard for the season’s opener”

“high comedy in which Sondheim’s satirical lyrics expounding the social woes of the time are given full play.”

“Manoly Farrell steals the show with her rendition of “America
,”

Don’t miss you’re the chance of a decade to see the Arthur Laurents/Stephen Sondheim Masterpiece on the Bellport Stage in it’s LAST WEEK!

Gateway is gearin’ up for ‘S Wonderful!

The music of George and Ira Gershwin returns to Long Island in “'S Wonderful: The New Gershwin Musical,” from June 1-18 at the Gateway Playhouse in Bellport.

“'S Wonderful” is comprised of five mini-musicals which follow young lovers through 1920s New York, 1930s Paris, 1940s Hollywood, 1950s New Orleans and into the present day. The stories are inspired by true events and feature characters based on performers Leslie Caron, Gene Kelly, Harold Lloyd, Nina Mae Mckinney and Jane Powell. The revue features over 40 tunes from the Great American Songbook, including “The Man I Love,” “Let's Call the Whole Thing Off,” “Love is Here to Stay,” “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Rhapsody in Blue.”

The show was conceived in 2010 by Ray Roderick, with the help of the Gershwin estate. It was originally staged by Roderick at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera Cabaret and has since toured throughout the United States and Canada, selling out many venues.

Roderick will also direct the Bellport production. He has directed at regional theatres including Bay Street Theatre, Goodspeed Opera House and Westchester Broadway Theatre and is also the creator of the Irving Berlin revue “I Love a Piano,” which was a part of The Gateway's 2010 season and has toured internationally.

Choreographer Vincent Pesce reunites with Roderick at The Gateway. Pesce choreographed the national tour of “’S Wonderful” and was the associate choreographer for the Broadway productions of “The Pajama Game” and “Wonderful Town,” both Tony Award-winners for Best Choreography. His work is frequently seen on television, including the NBC series “Clash of the Choirs” and “Grease: You’re the One That I Want.”

Music director Nathan W. Perry completes the artistic team. Perry previously served as music director for “Show Boat” and “A Christmas Carol” at The Gateway, and has also worked at many other regional theatres.

The cast of five includes Gateway veterans Ashley Betton as Nina and Matthew Crowle as Harold. Betton’s credits at The Gateway include “Dreamgirls” and “Holiday Spectacular.” Crowle appeared in the Broadway production of “Monty Python's Spamalot and was a hit in past Gateway seasons, with roles in both and “Hello Dolly! and “The Drowsy Chaperone.”

Deidre Haren as Leslie, Stephanie Koenig as Jane and Sean A. Watkins as Gene will be making their Gateway debuts.
